Just a few months ago, a new restaurant across the street from Sequoia Station opened up, La Catrina Birria, filling one of the tastiest niches Redwood City has been lacking since, well, forever.
In Redwood City, the options for birria are fairly limited, between either catching elusive food trucks on weekdays or pricier sit-down options like Milagros across from the Redwood City Library. La Catrina offers a good middle ground with more affordable options and a wide variety of birria-based items from birria tacos to birria fries.
Walking in, you’re greeted by the expansive menu on the wall, with colorful illustrations of the items, a large graphic of the La Catrina logo and colorful Mexican decor that might be a bit over the top, but, overall, makes the joint feel homey and authentic.
While the item covers various categories, I stuck with the tacos to judge the most basic form of Birria on the same playing field as other places in Redwood City. While the taco on its own was on the milder end of birria flavors, the consommé or soup they give you to dunk the taco in really brought out the flavors, making short work of the three tacos on my plate. Paired with a glass bottle of Mexican Coke, I left feeling very satisfied and excited to return, knowing the laundry list of items I still needed to try.
Overall, La Catrina Birria offers those who love birria and want it quickly a fantastic option. Not only is it quick, but it’s also more affordable than traditional sit-down restaurants and even some food trucks. Its menu and food quality give customers a reason to come back again and again. I give La Catrina a 9/10 and think it should be known as one of Redwood City’s newest hidden gems.
