March into College is a 4-week long event where students and/or guardians meet at 6:30 p.m. every Wednesday of March in the multi-use room (MUR).
The first session of this event is held on March 4. The topic of this session is to help students build their college list. The second is on March 11 about University of California (UC) applications. The third is on March 18, where the attendees read real applications with transcripts, letters of recommendation, and much more. The final session is on March 25, where they discuss financial aid and scholarships.
Woodsides College Advisor Zorina Matavulj created and has run this event since 2008. She says the goal of this event is to help juniors get ahead and understand college applications to prevent future pressure and rushing.
“Instead of going into the senior year not knowing what the heck is happening, you go into the year not feeling as stressed because you know you know what to do,” Matavulj said.
Through these sessions, students learn all about the process of applying and what matters when you do apply.
“There are so many things students are unclear about in the college applications,” Matavulj said. “They don’t understand how colleges view their applicants and what is important to [these] colleges. That’s why March of the college exists to tell them and help them know what to focus on when applying.”
March into College is a free resource for anyone to attend. Matavulj hopes students recognize this and take advantage of these opportunities. He even hopes it may inspire some to pursue a route they didn’t think was possible.
“The first thing I would say [to a student considering going to college] is this is possible,” Matavulj said. “We are going to work hard on the applications to show all of your wonderful qualities, so the colleges will know about them and see what you have to offer.”
