With the Super Bowl drawing ever nearer, America’s most prized sporting event has come under fire. Bad Bunny, this year’s Super Bowl halftime headliner, has caused a stir within the national government, specifically with President Donald Trump.
Over the past few weeks, Trump has generated a lot of noise with his statements about the big game. Initially, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced it would have a strong presence before, during and after the event; however, the National Football League (NFL) later disputed that claim. Trump has since called the decision to choose Bad Bunny, who is Puerto Rican and subsequently a US citizen, as the halftime performer “a terrible choice. All [Bad Bunny’s music] does is sow hatred [towards America].” Trump stated on Jan. 28, “I’m anti-them.” However, the NFL has since defended the Puerto Rican superstar, going so far as to say Bad Bunny is “effing awesome.”
“I really don’t know why the halftime show has to drum up such a huge conversation about the game,” senior Carson Detloff said. “At the end of the day, I just want to watch some good football; people shouldn’t have to worry about the government crashing the party, and it’s literally just the halftime show.”
