Woodside beat Sequoia 42-14 in the annual “Log” game. Woodside keeps the rivalry trophy and heads home with another year of bragging rights.
Even though Sequoia scored first and led the game 7-0 after the first quarter, Woodside did not panic. The Wildcats scored 21 points in both the second and third quarters, taking full control by shutting down Sequoia until late in the fourth, when Sequoia added seven more points to the board, which did not affect the outcome of the game. Sophomore JJ Lange had a big punt return touchdown that definitely boosted the energy, but the blowout came from a disciplined defense, a smart offense, and the whole team staying locked in and engaged for all four quarters.
“I think that with it being a Saturday game, the energy wasn’t as high as it usually is,” sophomore and center Jeremiah Talo said. “But I think after some big plays, after playing the game a little bit, getting into the rhythm, I think the energy kind of lifted, and then we just rode that wave of energy to victory.”
Jeremiah Talo said that the team’s special performance surprised everyone, and especially helped the team’s momentum in a very positive way when Woodside really needed it.
“I think something that went way better than I originally expected was definitely some of our special teams performances with that punt return touchdown,” Talo said. “I didn’t really expect anything like that on special teams to happen, and that kind of shocked me.”
Head Coach Justin Andrews praised the team for staying focused after a slow start in the first quarter, with no points. He credited players on both sides of the ball who made an impact.
“The way that we were able to weather the early storm and mistakes to still put together like a solid, dominating game,” Andrews said. “JJ Lange had a big impact on all three phases of the game, whether it was offense, defense, or special teams. Isaac Pech was his normal disruptive self… lots of big plays, led the team in tackles, and had an interception.”
