“Fire and Ash” is an excellent and creative new addition to the popular series. It is full of vivid, imaginative settings that mesmerize the audience and an entertaining plot that displays various powerful themes. These beautiful backgrounds and characters, as well as the rich storyline, are what make Avatar a box-office success. Avatar movies are known for being about three hours long, but this film was so interesting and engaging that it felt like the credits rolled too soon. From whimsical wind traders, bioluminescent waters, volcanic landscapes, lush forests and so much more, “Avatar” has made many people, including myself, feel as though we are being transported into a dream.
The audience has high standards for James Cameron’s movies, and this one did not disappoint. Cameron always had big dreams and plans for Avatar. As a child, Cameron made drawings and scripts that he later used in the movies. Once he finished the screenplay in 1994, he waited another decade to begin filming so that technology would be advanced enough to make his vision a reality.
“Fire and Ash” had a very engaging plot. The movie follows Jake Sully and Neytiri’s family, where they are forced to make the decision to take Miles “Spider” Socorro away from their children for safety. Jake Sully is played by Sam Worthington. Jake is the protagonist, a paraplegic marine who takes his twin brother’s spot in the RDA’s Avatar program, and when transported to Pandora, he marries Neytiri and turns his back on the RDA. The RDA stands for the Resources Development Administration, which is a powerful organization that uses destructive methods to extract valuable minerals from Pandora. Neytiri is played by Zoe Saldana. Neytiri is a fierce Na’vi who is the princess of the Omaticaya clan and the spouse of Jake. Jake and Neytiri are adopted into the Metkayina clan and have three children: Neteyam (died in Avatar: Way of Water), Lo’ak, Tuktirey, an adopted daughter, Kiri and Spider (the son of Neytiri’s enemy, Miles Quaritch).
The antagonists in this movie are Varang (Oona Chaplin) and the RDA, specifically Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), a RDA commander who partners with the Ash people to fight the Metkayina clan. Varang is the ruthless leader of the Ash clan who attacks the Metkayina clan to secure resources for survival.
Continuing the plot, the family wanted to travel with Spider to say their goodbyes. Before they take off, the Mangkwan ash people attack and loot their transport. The rest of the movie is a fight between the Ash people and the Na’vi, with the RDA interfering at times. They capture the children and threaten the tribe. The Na’vi people are victorious in defeating the Mangkwan and RDA, but more conflicts will arise in the future. I thought that this plot was interesting by bringing in a new tribe that went against Eywa, which is what most Na’vi believe is the great mother, and giving them a different way of life, as well as volcanic elements. I also thought that the three-way fight between the Omaticaya, Mangkwan and RDA was very intriguing and unique.
Overall, this movie explores beautiful themes of family, belonging, destruction, grief, environmentalism and much more. “Avatar: Fire and Ash” has proven it belongs in the renowned franchise by continuing to follow the high standards set for this series and for James Cameron.
