A fire broke out at Avenue Liquors in Roosevelt Plaza in the early morning hours of Nov. 3, killing two.
The Redwood City Fire Department reached the store around 5:30 a.m. to find the building “fully engulfed in flames” according to a statement released by the Redwood City Police Department at 10:51 a.m. Monday. Firefighters found the bodies of the deceased later that morning.
“During suppression efforts, firefighters opening the roof observed what appeared to be two individuals inside the structure,” the RCPD said in the same statement. “Both showed no signs of life and appeared to have sustained severe burns.”
The coroner’s office has yet to identify those killed in the fire. However, members of the community have come forward alleging that those who were killed were the manager of the store, known as Benny, and one of his employees, both of whom lived in the back of the store, according to reporting from The Palo Alto Daily Post. NBC Bay Area reported that Benny’s car was still seen parked in the parking lot as of Monday night.
The entirety of Roosevelt Plaza was closed at the time of publication, with only authorized personnel permitted entry.
The Redwood City Fire Department, Redwood City Police Department and the San Mateo Coroner’s Office are still investigating this matter.
