The varsity girls basketball team cruised to a 52-33 victory over Sequoia on Jan. 15. Woodside led from the start, holding a 15-7 advantage after the first quarter and extending the lead to 32-12 at halftime. The team maintained control in the second half, finishing the third quarter with a 41-26 lead before sealing the win in the final frame.
Woodside’s league record is now 6-7, with a key quad game scheduled for Jan. 17. Despite the dominant win, players acknowledge there’s room for improvement.
“We dominated from the start, and we were able to keep the lead throughout,” senior guard Kiki Maciel said. “My highlight was Lyla hitting that crazy bank shot for three.”
The team’s offense was on “point” with freshman Lyla Rich
scoring 18 points of the 52 they proved effective, although Maciel noted an area to focus on improving.
“We need to work on defense,” senior Sophia Pestoni said. “A few of our closeouts gave them hope. We need to keep the pressure on.”
Pestoni, another key contributor, emphasized the team’s substantial growth this season.
“We’re improving with each game,” she said. “We need to communicate more on the court. We have to be more vocal to stay sharp.”
Looking ahead as the team prepares for their upcoming games, players are confident that their continued improvement will lead to stronger performances.
“We’ve got a lot of potential,” Pestoni added. “If we keep working together, we can finish strong.”
