Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing and evolving, with generative AI becoming stronger, and as AI becomes more powerful, it becomes more capable of performing various tasks with wider applications, finding its way into countless parts of society.
More than 300 million people use ChatGPT, Open AI’s generative AI model, every week. It has developed over time, recently coming out with higher AI models available for a monthly subscription, which are of a higher quality, and work at an elevated level. AI is under development to have improved reasoning, which would help AI to continue evolving past computational limitations. The Guardian says that AI is evolving and changing now, with people needing to rethink the approach to what AI is, in order to move to a better approach of AI for the future.
Some students across campus make use of AI for a variety of things, such as sophomore Kyle Estrada, who makes use of AI for general applications, but also some specific things that cater to him and his passions, like his passion for music.
“[I use AI] if I’m in a sticky situation, and I need AI to get me out of it,” Estrada said. “I sometimes use AI [for music], to do something like make an AI cover of Fein, [which I’ve done] a few times.”
Beyond recreational use, AI has been used in many different ways, in order to make life easier for people, or for more serious applications, as Swati Tomar, Advanced Placement (AP) computer science teacher said.
“I use [AI] on Amazon, for any product review,” Tomar said. “[AI] gives you a conclusion, like ‘it’s not that good of a product because a lot of customers are complaining about this thing or that thing.’ I love that it saves time, I mean, these are all luxuries, but they already started using AI in the medical field, like [submitting] MRIs, and the AI can pretty accurately figure out what’s going on and come up with suggestions.”
Sophomore Aaditya Soond uses Google Gemini in order to enhance his searches in order to save time and effort, another way that AI can find its way into people’s lives.
“I use the Google Gemini auto AI search, maybe a little too much,” Soond said. “It’s good for a quick overview of the topic. [If] I’m looking at obscure topics, it gives a really quick summary of what I’m trying to find, rather than needing to go through ten different links to find what I need.”
Soond said that although AI has been extremely helpful, it should also be considered a tool and approached with caution, especially when it comes to reliance on AI.
“These AI tools, I think [they] have been a positive thing,” Soond said. “We’ve gotten a deeper insight into math because of it. I think that it’s been overused, but if we cut down on the overuse, it would be a really good innovation.”
Tomar said as AI grows society will too, leading to a scramble before everything settles down into a changed society with AI integrated throughout people’s lives.
“I think we are in a phase right now, like when computers were first introduced and everyone was [doubting them], but now, after just a few decades, we cannot imagine our lives without computers, they’re everywhere,” Tomar said. “That’s the same thing with AI, it’s in the beginning phase, but I think it’s making its way into everything, from clothing to self driving to medical use, it’s everywhere, and it’s benefiting us.”
