As the new school year starts, the new Board of Student Affairs (BOSA) gets busy with planning for the year. This year, BOSA aims to have a more positive campus through their theme word “uplift”.
BOSA’s main job is to plan student activities, such as dances, events, clubs and sports, as well as oversee all four grades. During the school year, they help approve clubs and budget for sports with uniforms and referees to ensure that activities are well-supported.
“We want to bring a sense of spirit, positivity and community throughout the year at Woodside and make everyone feel connected and that they have a place at school,” senior and BOSA chief justice Isella Gapastione said.
One component that shapes a sense of community and promotes an uplifting environment at school is the dialogue.
“Our main thing we want to focus on is a dialogue because we think that’s most impactful when trying to maintain an uplifting voice on campus,” senior and BOSA president Emma Funge said.
Dialogue is especially important when it comes to criticism of events and themes at school. Leadership promotes non-negative speech and disapproves of actions such as booing at sporting events.
“We want to promote, not demote. At any sporting event we never demote and uplift ourselves and ignore the rest,” Gapastione said.
This year, BOSA started “Wildcat W’s”, a video feature on the announcements that highlights wins around school as a way to promote positivity.
“We’re going to do Wild Side highlight games, so each sport, each season we’re gonna highlight a certain game and encourage people to go to that game,” senior and BOSA vice president Lily Gustafson said.
One exciting event for the school is homecoming. From the spirit days and themes for grade levels, the homecoming rally is the final piece to it. During the homecoming rally, the school meets the captains of fall sports, watches a skit from each grade and sees some demonstrations from clubs.
“I’m excited for our first homecoming rally, BOSA will emcee the rally, so talking at the rally, which would be our first big school event,” Gustafson said.
This is where students get to meet the BOSA team for the 2024-2025 school year if people are still unaware.
“I’m very excited to introduce ourselves to the school through the rally,” Gapastione said.
These BOSA members have experience in the leadership class and class officer roles. They look forward to implementing new activities that uplift their peers at Woodside. With more ideas to come, they are ready for the year.
“We want to develop our ideas and create more spirit on campus and an environment where everyone can thrive,” Funge said.
