Starting on Oct. 21st, Woodside’s Homecoming, or Hoco, spirit week followed by the Hoco rally and dance is underway. But, what goes on behind the scenes?
Leadership is in charge of picking activities they think everyone would enjoy. Junior vice president MaryCarla Germano is the lead of the Hoco rally this year and works with other members of leadership to ensure the rally runs smoothly.
“I plan everything really far in advance to make sure that I stay on track with everything,” Germano said. “Then I have like an agenda of stuff that I use to keep on top of stuff.”
Germano has been working to try and make the rally enjoyable and something to look forward to. Germano wants to incorporate cheer and dance this year since this will be the first rally of the year.
“I have to figure out how I’m gonna incorporate cheer and dance into [the rally],” Germano said. “The whole thing sounds kind of hard.”
This part of the rally allows students who aren’t in leadership to participate in the skit. Junior president Catherine Blume is running the junior class skit for this year’s rally, which has proved to not be an easy task.
“This skit is a long and hard process that we work on in advance,” Blume said. “We came up with the dialogue and the songs we’re incorporating into our skit.”
Germano is working to put a Disney spin on the activities for the rally and also the spirit week themes. These themes for spirit week are picked by leadership and are voted on by the class. The games that are played at the rallies are mainly picked uses ideas from social media.
“[We use] Tik Tok and other social media to get ideas [for the Hoco rally games] from what other people have done,” Germano said. “We find the game we liked and then we put our own Disney spin on it.”
The purpose of the Hoco rally and spirit week is to get students excited about the upcoming dance and fill the school with spirit and excitement for everyone.
“I like the excitement that [the rally] creates for homecoming and the football game,” junior Catherine Doyle said.
