The first home football game of the season kicked off with a 49-13 victory for Woodside against Castro Valley, with Woodside JV losing their match 32-16.
The Wildcats and Trojans faced off this past Thursday, Sept. 11, in their third game of the season. With Varsity remaining undefeated and JV taking their first loss, the match was a notable moment early in the season.
Head Varsity Coach Justin Andrews talks about his pride in the varsity team’s performance in this early-season game.
“Very proud of how we execute, how our guys fly around, they’re having a really good time,” Andrews said. “They’re having a lot of fun, and it makes my job way more fun too.”
Notably, the varsity team showed its hunger for the win with quarterback Charlie Dalrymple scoring a touchdown almost immediately. Varsity senior Carson Dettloff, one of the team’s edge rushers, talks about his thoughts on the overall game.
“I feel like we did good,” Dettloff said. “A little sloppy here and there, but it’s nothing that we can’t fix.”
Andrews discussed some strengths he noticed during the match that the team will utilize and build on as the season progresses.
“[I liked] the overall tenacity,” Andrews said. “I feel like we really kind of take it to the defense, take it to the offense, and just play fast with fire.”
An important note about this game was the number of flags given out, something that Andrews also commented on.
“For the most part, we had a lot of mistakes, a lot of penalties in this game that were very uncharacteristic of us,” Andrews said. “And you know, when you win 49-13, it’s easy to kind of gloss over on, but we’re going to really look back at those and try to clean those things up, because in tighter games, those things are going to cost us.”
As for key players, Andrews named several who have been key contributors to Woodside’s past couple of wins.
“JJ Lange had some really big plays defensively, Isaac Petch has been a force all season long, and just really been a leader of our defense,” Andrews said. “And yeah, Daniel Torres, those guys have been really, really good.”
Sophomore JV running back Julien Andrade talks about his thoughts on JV’s overall performance against Castro Valley. Last season, varsity had an overall win-to-loss record of 7-3, and JV’s was 9-1.
“I feel like we definitely could have done better,” Andrade said. “But overall, we gave it our all, and that was a good team that we went against. And, yeah, honestly, we just need to put more work in.”
Andrade was a key player in the JV match, scoring both touchdowns for the Wildcats.
“For the next game, we’re focusing on getting on the ball, making sure we don’t get as exhausted as we did in this game, and not letting the other team get in our head,” said Andrade.
As for varsity, Andrews states their goals for the upcoming season are to maintain the stellar performances seen thus far.
“We will continue to stay hungry, continue to get better, and not get complacent,” Andrews said.
