Woodside High School’s varsity softball team cruised to a 7–1 victory in the Central Coast Section (CCS) quarterfinals on Saturday, continuing their postseason run and punching their ticket to the semifinals.
“Everyone showed up with high energy, ready to win,” junior Mo Overbey said. “Defense was really in tune and strong—we had a couple innings that were three up, three down.”
Woodside’s defense made a big impact early, holding their opponent scoreless for most of the game. Meanwhile, the Wildcats’ offense took a few innings to heat up, but once they made adjustments at the plate, they started to take control. Runners got on base, mistakes by the opposing team were capitalized on and the Wildcats never looked back.
“We struggled a little bit in the beginning, but we made adjustments quickly,” Overbey said. “We got runners on and were aggressive on the base path, scoring runs and taking advantage of the errors made.”
This year marks a step up from last season, when Woodside made the playoffs but did not advance. Now competing in a higher division, the Wildcats are excited to keep the momentum going. They will face Watsonville on Wednesday at a neutral field in Los Gatos for a shot at the CCS Championship game.
“I’m super excited to keep playing and hopefully make it to the Championship,” Overbey said. “I know this team can.
