The junior varsity (JV) boys baseball team keeps their large win streak going, extending it to eight games after their fourth mercy rule win of the season against Lincoln High School.
It was the first game since April 5 because of spring break. They were coming back from a 3-1 win against Sacred Heart Prep. This was the first game they played against Lincoln High School and the outcome was good, although there could have been some improvement despite the win. The team only allowed a single hit to Lincoln, but Woodside recorded six errors, resulting in the two runs. Despite the errors, it seemed everything else went well for Woodside. Freshman Ben Tomatis was the starting pitcher for Woodside and went three innings, striking out six, walking three, allowing one hit and one run. The run wasn’t an earned run, so it won’t affect his current season earned run average (ERA). In the fourth inning, freshman Maxwell Satusky replaced Tomatis and pitched the final two innings, striking out none, walking one, but not allowing a hit. After the pitching performances, in four appearances, Tomatis is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He leads the team with 15 strikeouts in 9.1 innings pitched. Satusky, in two appearances, has a 2.33 ERA with no strikeouts in three innings as well as a save. Head coach Daniel Lee talks about the team’s pitching performance, describing what they did to solidify the win.
“Tomatis and Max threw a lot of strikes and forced a lot of hits,” Lee said. “Our defense was there to support them.”
After the first three batters of the game for Woodside got out, a rally in the second inning started for Woodside, resulting in three runs for the team. In the third, they scored two to make the game a 5-1 game. In the fourth, another three runs scored, edging the team closer to a mercy rule. But after giving up a run to Lincoln in the top of the fifth, it seemed Woodside had some work to do, and work they did, scoring the last four runs of the game. The final run was scored by sophomore Kyle Chad after a single by freshman Ansel Tort to send everyone home early with a 12-2 win. This gives the team their fourth mercy rule win, their last one coming just two games prior on March 29 against Washington High School. Lee hopes the team can keep winning despite the long spring break in which they did not play a game.
“This game will definitely boost their confidence,” Lee said. “But they are just coming off a break so we can kind of see them being slow, so hopefully this will set them in the right place.”
After the loss, Lincoln’s record is 7-7-1. This was the game after they had won an extra inning game against Washington High School the day prior. They started off their season 0-4-1, but after their game on April 9, they had won six of their last seven games. But it seemed like they couldn’t keep up with Woodside’s pitching.
With every win, there has to be a player of the game. Who was the player of the game to Lee?
“It’s a good team win,” Lee said. “But if I had to choose one, I would probably say Tomatis. He pitched a great game and got a base hit.”
