The beginning of the girl’s varsity softball season has resulted in four wins and three losses in the non-league games they have played thus far.
Last year, the team had nine wins and 15 losses, which placed them seventh in the Peninsula Bay League. The team’s first league meet will be against Kings Academy and take place on March 13. Junior Mo Overbey talked about their performance in the past seven non-league games.
“I think the season’s feeling pretty good and pretty high energy,” said Overbey. “It’s sort of the younger team but so far we’ve been playing all the games 110%, and I’m excited for how this season’s gonna turn out.”
Overbey further reflected on the team’s losses, mentioning that the games were close.
“I mean, there’s been the losses that we’ve had,” Overbey said. “But I think they were close and definitely could have been dubs.”
Junior Vanessa Carlos expanded more on the energy of the games, showing even when the team lost their support for the team didn’t waiver.
“All the games were really good,” Carlos said. “We had a lot of energy work in so they weren’t bad losses.”
Despite their three losses this season, the most recent three games have all been wins for Woodside. Notably, Woodside won its March 7 game against Mercy High School ten to nothing.
“We’ve had a few losses together as a team, and pulled out a few good wins,” junior Ellie Severin said. “We’ve all worked really well together.”
According to Carlos, the team began preparing through conditioning prior to the official start of softball season, in the earlier winter months.
“Conditioning was good. We just try to get back in shape,” Carlos said. “Especially if we haven’t done anything all summer or since last season.”
Overbey stated her most memorable moment of the season so far was a double home run which took place in the very first game.
“First game, our sophomore Caroline got two home runs.” said Overbey “So that was a great way to start the season!”
Overbey talks about the team’s goals for improvement this season, especially as they begin league games.
“Definitely to come to every game 100%, high energy, and just play together,” said Overbey.
