The varsity boys soccer team won big last Friday night against San Mateo High School, taking home a 5-0 win. This triumph effectively increased their current win streak to three games.
The Wildcats started off the first half with a goal three minutes and 30 seconds into the game. That was one of the four goals they scored within the first half. In the second half, they scored one goal with 29 minutes and 54 seconds remaining. One notable play was when senior Mattheo Lacasia scored a hat trick to contribute to the blowout win.
“Mattheo had that hat trick, we were generally just rotating the field, and passing [was] really effective,” senior right back and right wing Kash Hodges said.
According to Hodges, this was one of the first games the players actually played well as a team, since they had struggled going into the season. They started with a win to loss ratio of 0-4. Before their current three game win streak, they were only 2-7.
“[Our strategy] was really just to play well as a team,” Hodges said. “We had a bunch of really good individual moments, but this was one of the first couple games we were playing well as a team.”
After the loss, San Mateo is now 2-9. After they won their first game of the season, they ended up going on a six game losing streak. On Jan. 8, they broke the bad run with a win against Burlingame High School. As of now, they are now on another losing streak of three games after the loss sustained against Woodside.
“They weren’t playing the ball as well,” Hodges said. “They made a lot more mistakes than us, and I think that ultimately led to them losing.”
Hodges hopes that moving forward the team continues utilizing teamwork to ensure victories, as they have for the past three games.
“Keep winning,” said Hodges. “We’re on a win streak, we won the first two games in our league, and hopefully we can continue that going forward.”
