On Oct. 15, in a game against Burlingame, girls varsity volleyball lost in three sets. The theme of this game was “Pink Out” in support of breast cancer awareness.
Outside of the new gym, the Pink Ribbon Club sold merchandise to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Although the team lost, their performance in the second set was particularly noteworthy, demonstrating their potential and ability to bounce back. From the start, there was energy in the second set.
“I think we definitely came out with more energy than we normally do,” varsity head coach Thomas Feng said. “We took confident swings and made aggressive plays again and again.”
Outside hitter Caroline Ong was hit in the face by Division I commit and Burlingame player Ella Duong, causing her to be substituted out and have a change in the lineup.
“Big shout out to Catherine Blume for stepping in for Caroline, who took a huge hit to the face like a champ,” Feng said. “As a team member, you need to step in when starters and different role players fall through.”
Another substitution, junior outside and opposite hitter Gianna Caron, got a dig that transitioned into a point and an ace right after.
“[There] was great defense from the team, great transition kills, and getting a lot of big points,” Feng said.
According to varsity captain Megan Davis, team energy and trying to have a good time helps the team perform better
“What always goes well for this team is when we have good energy on the court,” Davis said. “If we’re laughing with each other in between points and not getting frustrated it helps.
The focus for the varsity team next two games on senior night on Tuesday, Oct. 22 against Hillsdale and Tuesday, Oct. 29 against Carlmont.
“I think we put up a much better fight than we did last time we played them,” junior setter Camille Sonnenberg said. “It means we’re improving.”
