Boys varsity water polo team faced off on senior night against Menlo-Atherton in an intense match. Despite Menlo-Atherton beating them earlier in the season, the Wildcats beat them in a team effort 12-5, Thursday, Oct. 10.
Woodside is 9-1 in Peninsula Bay League and their overall record is now 15-3 after their 9-8 win in double overtime against Burlingame on Thursday, Oct. 17.
“I’m really pleased with how the season has turned out so far, I feel like the team has really come together especially after losing a lot of seniors and having a new goalie,” senior Joseph Hohl said. “It’s a brand new team and I feel like we’ve gelled really well together.”
According to Hohl, Woodside was prepared for this game against Menlo-Atherton since they lost to them in their first league game of the season. Senior night also played a big role in this win because the student section showed up in a big way.
“Our first league game was against Menlo-Atherton, and we lost by two, and that was upsetting. We definitely wanted to win that game,” Hohl said. “Senior night also fired a lot of us up. Hearing all of my fellow students, friends, and family cheer us on, it was just a lot of fun and contributed to the win.”
The Woodside boys water polo team went into this game prepared as they drew up plays in practice specifically around their opponent. This big win over their rival Menlo-Atherton was a team effort as both senior team captains, Webster Antonchuk and Julian Hull scored hat tricks.
“Menlo-Atherton is our rival every year. We really wanted to beat them. That was our goal, going into practice, we would run a lot of plays around some of the guys on their team,” Hohl said.
