Senior and track and field captain Cal Adasiewicz secured the school record for pole vaulting.
The record was recently beaten in mid-April, causing Adasiewicz to be the school’s new record holder.
“I got a 12 foot nine [inches] and the record was 12 foot six [inches] before,” Adasiewicz said.
In pole vaulting, athletes use a flexible but sturdy pol to jump over a bar. After an injury during sophomore year, Cal was introduced to pole vaulting.
“[The coaches] were like, ‘Oh well the only thing you can really do is pole vault,’ and that’s kind of how I started,” Adasiewicz said.
But besides pole vaulting, Adasiewicz also does the 200-meter dash, where the athlete sprints one lap around the track for the fastest time, and relays, where the team must run a certain distance to their next teammate and pass a baton.
“I usually like to split my time [in practice],” Adasiewicz said. “I do my sprinting stuff and running stuff in the beginning and the final hour I pole vault.”
Not every athlete wants to continue their sports to college for various reasons, but sometimes it takes you to the next level.
After a strong season, Adasiewicz hopes to continue track and field in college.
“I’m trying to go to a school to continue running track and we’re going to see what happens,” Adasiewicz said.
