Woodside Varsity Football suffered a devastating 59-36 loss in this year’s homecoming game versus Capuchino.
The Wildcats began by reflecting on an injury-filled season where many of their starters were out indefinitely. It was hard to find depth in last week’s game, and it showed on the field: players who appeared tired while those on the sidelines due to injury appeared frustrated they were not able to contribute to their team. The Wildcats lacked an offensive surge and were stuck in a sudden slump.
The excitement of the crowd was drained quickly after Capuchino got off to a quick start with an immediate scoring drive. Homecomings games, known for having an energetic atmosphere, were lacking; Woodside was not able to gain much momentum. “The amount of people there definitely affects how we play,” Tommy Williams, safety of Woodside’s varsity team, commented.
This season, despite being filled with injuries, is still seen as a bright side as it was a major step up from Woodside’s prior 0-10 record.
The team now turns their attention to next week’s game versus Carlmont, their second to last game to close out the 2018 season. Currently sitting at a record of four wins and four loses in league, their new focus is winning the last two games and ending with a winning percentage. They hope to bounce back and end the season on a high note with potential victories over Carlmont and Menlo-Atherton.
“I love it when the crowd is there,” Scott Morimoto, wide receiver and co-captain, emphasized. “The cheering honestly makes us play better knowing that we have people on our side who are cheering us on.”
