Former First Children Barbara and Jenna Bush wrote a heartfelt letter Sasha and Malia Obama, current First Children, as their father prepares to leave the White House.

Barbara and Jenna began by reminiscing about Sasha and Malia’s first visit to the White House back in 2009. Although the Bush twins were well into their twenties by then, they saw their younger selves in the new First Children.

When you slid down the banister of the solarium,” state the Bush sisters, “Just as we had done as 8-year-olds and again as 20-year-olds chasing our youth, your joy and laughter were contagious.”

In the letter, the Bush twins reflect on the many opportunities that became available to Sasha and Malia as the daughters of the President and on how the Obama children shared a sisterly bond, just as the Bush’s did when they were the First Children.

“And through it all you had each other,” said the Twins, “Just like we did.”

Barbara and Jenna then tell the Obama’s to cherish and remember White House staff members and secret service, as they were an integral part of their youth and time at the White House.

The Bush’s acknowledge their unique experiences growing up in the White House: “We know it wasn’t always easy—the two of you and the two of us were teenagers trailed by men in backpacks—but they put their lives on hold for us,”

Towards the end of the letter, the Obama sisters are reminded to enjoy their lives and hold loyalty dear. The Bush twins also say to use their opportunities and experiences to make a “positive change” in the world.

Barbara and Jenna end by complementing the Obama girls on how they have stood through the harsh criticism that afflicts First Families.

Despite the criticism often faced by First Families, the Bush sisters ended the letter with a positive message: “As always, [your family] will be rooting for you as you begin your next chapter. And so will we.”
